Fil-Am sues school district for ignoring janitor's sex assault
REDWOOD CITY, California - A Filipino woman is suing the school district where she attended middle school for reportedly failing to take action after she was sexually assaulted by a school janitor in 2001 when she was 12.
Now 25, Roxanne Pedro claims Belmont-Redwood Shores School District and several administrators did nothing after she complained of being assaulted by Andre Edward, the school janitor at Ralston Middle School.
Pedro’s lawsuit comes 12 years after the alleged sexual assault incident, following new evidence that the school district failed to take action on at least six other sexual assault complaints going back to 1991.
According to Pedro’s lawsuit, she was working on her book report during school hours in the janitor’s office when Edwards pulled up her dress and groped her.
On Friday, the school district filed a motion to dismiss the complaint, saying it far exceeds the six-month statute of limitations.
Edwards is currently serving a nine-month jail sentence after pleading no contest to groping Pedro and another student in 2010.
