REDWOOD CITY, California – An appeal by the San Francisco man convicted of murdering his former girlfriend, Filipina Claire Joyce Tempongko, 14 years ago was denied.
The California Supreme Court rejected an appeal Wednesday by Tari Beltran after San Francisco police mishandled the victim's past domestic abuse complaint.
Beltran was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 26 years to life in prison for fatally stabbing the 28-year-old Tempongko in front of her two children in her Richmond district apartment in October 2000.
He testified that he had been thrown into a rage after she told him in insulting language that she had been pregnant by him and had gotten an abortion.
The court upheld his murder conviction.
