LOS ANGELES - A Filipino couple has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for running a human trafficking scheme in Paso Robles in California.
Maximino and Melinda Morales were sentenced Monday and were ordered to pay their victims US$600,000 in restitution.
The couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor undocumented workers last May.
Prosecutors say the Moraleses brought caregivers from the Philippines to the United States illegally.
They then forced their workers to live in closets, garages, and hallway floors, confiscated their passports and threatened them with deportation when they try to resign.
They even deducted money from their salaries as payment for bringing them into the US.
