MANILA -- Vice President Jejomar Binay remains optimistic that overseas Filipino worker Joselito Zapanta will be spared from the death chamber.
According to Binay, negotiations are still ongoing for Zapanta's release.
President Aquino earlier pledged a substantial amount to augment the blood money raised by the government to save Zapanta from execution.
Binay admitted to talking to the President about raising 4 million Saudi Arabian Riyals (SAR) or P45 million in blood money.
Zapanta was meted the death sentence for killing his Sudanese landlord in 2009.
The payment of the blood money was originally due on November 12, 2012, but was extended to March 12, 2013. A second extension was granted, with the deadline moved to November 3, 2013. -- Report from Henry Atuelan, dzMM
