LAS VEGAS, Nevada - A Filipino-American chef, who murdered his wife, appeared in court on Wednesday.

Richard Magdayo Dahan, who admitted to killing his wife Daisy Casalta-Dahan last week inside their apartment in Las Vegas, made his first court appearance before Judge Lippis.

The judge had asked for a Tagalog interpreter for Dahan. A court interpreter may be given to the accused party if the native language is not English.

Richard Magdayo Dahan appears in Las Vegas court.

Asked by the judge if he can afford to hire a lawyer, Dahan admitted he is penniless.

While waiting for his next court date on February 3, Dahan will remain detained at the Clark County Detention Center with no bail set.

Meanwhile, Daisy's friends and co-workers continue to seek justice for their friend.

Jacqueline Hagens, Daisy's co-worker, said she wants Dahan to get the death penalty.

"The death penalty, the maximum. I don't want him to sit there in prison and for 20 years waste our taxpayer dollars having three meals a day.... I want him to die," Hagens said.

Daisy's friends confirmed that their slain friend was a victim of domestic violence.

Out of fear, Daisy persevered to stay married to Richard, since she had no family in Las Vegas. Her family lives in Davao Oriental.

"Sabi niya na, 'Iniwan mo ako. Kahit saan ka magpunta, kahit pamilya mo hutingin ko, mahahanap kita. Takot na takot siya, at ayaw niya madamay kami pati pamilya niya kasi sabi raw 'Papatayin ko ang lahi mo'," Maria Antero, a friend of Daisy's, said.

"I knew some things but I didn't know the severity of what he was doing in the house. He was a monster and she hid it from me so well," Hagens said.

Daisy's friends are asking the Filipino community for help to send her remains back to the Philippines. Her family's wish is to see Daisy's body for one last time.
