MANILA, Philippines – Several empty balikbayan boxes which were not delivered to its recipients in the Philippines have been found in a garbage dump in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Empty balikbayan boxes

A concerned overseas Filipino worker (OFW) stumbled on the empty balikbayan boxes which still bore the names and addresses of its recipients in the Philippines.

The OFW contacted the numbers written on the boxes to inform them about the discovery.

Lourdes Pamplona was among those who sent a balikbayan box through Global Cargo last April. However, it was never delivered to her relatives in Marilao, Bulacan.

“Yung ganun nakita ko yung ebidensiya na talagang karton ko yun, napakasakit po sa kalooban ko yung ganoon na nakita ko na talagang merong tao talaga na kumuha ng cargo ko na hindi talaga nasa Pilipinas,” Pamplona said.

Pamplona, assisted by personnel from the embassy’s Assistance To Nationals Section, filed a case before the Riyadh police.

“They are not precluded from filing a case in the Philippines. What the embassy can do is document their complaint here,” said Vice Consul Red Genotiva.

The embassy is appealing to other victims of the Global Cargo to come out and file a similar complaint against the forwarding company.

Last year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) included in its list of unaccredited freight forwarders and consolidators Global Cargo due to complaints of undelivered balikbayan boxes. Report from Roland Blanco, ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau
