More US firms, industries looking to hire in 2014
LOS ANGELES – 2014 signals a better year for the American workforce.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate in the United States is at 7%, the lowest level since November 2008.
Nevada and Rhode Island have the highest unemployment rate at 9%, while California, the state with the largest number of Filipinos, is at 8.5%.
Based on a study by CSI Professionals, hiring used to be only focused on the fields finance and accounting. But this year, most companies from more industries are looking to hire.
"It's a better mix now. We have marketing, management, communications, graphics and design," said Marge Ordiales, vice president of CSI Professionals Inc.
Ordiales predicts a significant growth in the fields of leisure and hospitality.
"The American workforce is starting to de-stress and starting to value the quality of life, spending more time for yourself and the family," she said.
With the Affordable Care Act now in effect and employers with 50 and more employees required to provide health coverage to full-time workers, the hiring trend is likely to show an increase in hiring part-time workers.
"They will start hiring more people because would probably need to reduce 40 hours to 25 hours but they're gonna have two employees cause they're all gonna be classified as part time," she said.
With e-commerce and social media at its peak, part-time work can lead to another trend -- home business and entrepreneurship.
"You know, being an entrepreneur, it is a lonely world sometimes coz you're driven and some people don't agree. Weed out that fear. Weed out that excuse mentality coz that's what's gonna make you broke," said business owner Gina Alexander.
According to EmpoweredEzine.com, there are a lot of options for start-up and home businesses especially in technology.
"You've got to do what you love. You have to do, you have to find whatever it is that you love to do- you have to do it," she added.
Alexander also added the importance of improving your skills set and loading up on certification and training.
