Policy differences between Ramos and Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte is thankful to former President Fidel Ramos for pushing him to run and for supporting his presidential bid in the May 2016 elections.

As an indication of their close ties, Duterte designated Ramos as the country’s special envoy to China after the Philippines won an international arbitral ruling on maritime rights over the South China Sea. 

However, Ramos’ resignation as special envoy announced this week fueled speculations that the former leader has had enough of Duterte’s policy pronouncements. 

Ramos aides, government officials, and Duterte himself, however, have sought to downplay the apparent souring of ties between the two leaders.

Weeks before his resignation, Ramos was very vocal about his objections to some of Duterte’s statements.
