According to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute’s “Pinggang Pinoy” model, to meet daily energy and nutrient needs, a healthy meal for Filipino adults should consist of "Go" or energy-giving food such as brown rice, wheat bread, oatmeal, and root crops; "Grow" or body-building food such as fish, lean meat, poultry, eggs, and milk and milk products; and "Glow" or body-regulating food such as fruits and vegetables. Filipinos should also drink at least eight glasses of water every day and lessen sugary beverages.

To mark Nutrition Month, The ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group looked at the eating habits of Filipinos and how much they eat of specific food items that make up “Pinggang Pinoy” by analyzing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority's "National and Regional Consumption of Selected Agricultural Commodities in the Philippines 2015-2016."
