MANILA (UPDATE) - Yet another former Makati official has linked Sen. Nancy Binay to the cakes being distributed by the Makati local government to senior citizens, a claim that was swiftly denied by the senator.
Engineer Mario Hechanova, the former head of Makati City's general services department and vice chairman of the bids and awards committee, said no less than former Makati Mayor and now Vice President Jejomar Binay followed up on the payment for the cakes that were being delivered to the senior citizens of Makati.
He claimed the mayor was following up on the payment because it would go to his daughter, Nancy.
"Minsan po pinatawag niya ako at ang sabi niya sa akin: 'Mario, ano ba ang nangyayari dun sa payment sa cake ni Nancy,'" he said.
He said he had to hold off payment because the list of senior citizens submitted by the social welfare department did not have signatures.
Asked if he believes that Binay's daughter supplies the cakes, he said: "Sa palagay ko ganun po kasi ang fina follow-up yung bayad e."
Senator Binay, however, denied Hechanova's claim and challenged him to present proof that she is the supplier of Makati's cakes.
"Umaapaw ang kasinungalingan ni Mario Hechanova," Binay said.
"Inuulit ko rin po, wala po akong bakeshop, at hindi rin po ako marunong magbake. Bawal po ang pamilya ng incumbent officials na magtransact sa City Hall dahil sa conflict of interests."
She also urged her fellow senators to show to same enthusiasm they are displaying in scrutinizing the national budget.
Hechanova resigned from Makati City Hall in 2009 after 19 years as a Makati City employee.
He admitted that he resigned because he felt "betrayed" after Binay refused to support Mercado as mayoral candidate in the 2010 election.
