MANILA - Leadership expert John Maxwell has some tips for Filipinos on who to choose as their leaders in 2016.

In an interview on ANC's "Headstart," Maxwell, author of the best-selling book "Laws on Leadership," experience and good character are both important qualities to look for when choosing a leader.

This, he said, when asked who Filipinos should choose in the upcoming 2016 presidential elections: one who has experience but faces corruption allegations or another who has good moral values but lacks experience.

"Well, I think experience is very important especially in high levels of leadership. Leaders that are great leaders understand context and big picture. You cannot understand context and big picture without experience," he said.

"But it shouldn't be either or... You have to find somebody who had great experience but would absolutely do the right thing," Maxwell said, adding that it is also important for a leader to have courage.

"I would look for someone with experience that has a proven track record of success. They are good in as far as decision makers, they see the big picture, they have a real sense of doing the right thing... I want a leader with a great heart, but I want a leader also who has a great leadership ahead."

Maxwell also has nothing but good words for President Benigno Aquino III.

He said he admires Aquino for his courage.

"From a distance, from what I knew of [him], I've always admired his courage and felt that -- from a distance again -- he has very good leadership principles that he follows," said Maxwell.
