It has been named a UP icon. Its continued operations has been petitioned on Facebook and Change.org. And its case has even reached the courts.
But on July 9, 2014, the Beach House in the University of the Philippines is closing its doors after 28 years.
After serving countless students since 1986, the popular barbecue place, located at the edge of the Sunken Garden (where it apparently got its name), has been asked by the UP administration to vacate the area near the Main Library.
In response, students, faculty and alumni have come in droves during the last few days to have their last lunch and say goodbye while recalling how the place figured in their university life. Many diners wax poetic as they recount their meals under the trees while catching a whiff of the barbecue being grilled.
The owners said they might transfer somewhere near the campus. But many believe that it will never be the same Beach House again.
