MANILA – University of the Philippines professor and political analyst Dr. Clarita Carlos thinks that with the recent turn of events in the pork barrel scam, TV personality Kris Aquino may have given birth again before the case is solved.
Speaking to Ted Failon in his morning radio program in DZMM, Carlos said that alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles’ decision to spill the beans might delay the progress of the case.
“If I may share a personal experience, I have a very simple bouncing check [case] na nagdemanda ako. Alam mo bang pitong taon na ay binubuno ko pa? Bouncing check lang ito considering na it’s a very small amount of money. Eh ‘yan, bilyones ‘yan. While it’s true that it’s a good start pero kapag hindi ‘yan na-sustain, wala na naman. Nanganak na naman siguro si Kris Aquino, wala, naiba na ‘yung ating [focus].”
Kris, President Aquino's youngest sister, gave birth to her first child, Joshua, with actor Phillip Salvador, in 1995. Twelve years later, she gave birth to Bimby, her son with basketball star James Yap. She is single again after her marriage to Yap was annulled 2 years ago.
Carlos compared the pork barrel scam to the Maguindanao massacre which happened in 2009 but until now, the trial is still ongoing.
“Remember ‘yung Ampatuan na karumal-dumal? Where is it now? Andami pa ngang hindi na-a-arraign.”
The professor claimed that the controversy poses a big challenge to the fairness and objectivity of the Aquino administration.
“Diyan sila talaga macha-challenge. Hindi pwedeng meron silang tinititigan, hindi pwede silang merong tinitignan. In other words, the ship has hit the fan so let it be.”
She said that every lawmaker who was involved in the case must be named in order to prove that the pork barrel scam is not just a ploy of the administration to besmirch the names of prominent politicians especially that another election is upcoming.
“Kasi ang lapit na ng eleksyon; i-factor in mo ‘yan. Will it matter to the voting public? I don’t know. There are some where it will not matter, there are some where it will matter. But that said, I’m sure there many Napoleses in the past. It just so happened na pinreso niya itong si Benhur Luy kaya lumabas ‘yan.
“Sa malawakang pananaw, dahil napakaraming tao ata ang madadawit dyan, marami talagang mababahiran dyan. Para ka makalinis ng isang bagay, kailang i-Clorox mo. You really need to start with a clean slate because everybody’s hands are dirty, so bakit hindi, di ba?”
Meanwhile, Carlos said that because many members of the Senate and House of Representatives have been implicated in the pork barrel scam, the two institutions are already compromised.
“These [The Senate and the House of Representatives] have certainly been compromised but we are also at fault because we have voted people who are really may uhog pa nga sa ilong.”
However, she clarified that she is not belittling younger lawmakers but said that they still have a lot to learn.
“Ang pangalan ng Senate, ang ibig sabihin ay elderly or older people. And not just old in terms of calendar years but old in terms of wisdom. That’s the reason why ‘yung mga treaties, ‘yung mga mahahalaga, sila ‘yung nagle-legislate and they are acted upon. And this is not to denigrate the young. But the young, marami pang kanina ‘yan na kakainin.”
Carlos also reiterated the observation of many analysts that the Philippines is on the verge of becoming a “failed state.”
“Masyado nang na-compromise ang ating mga institusyon. Not just the Senate. Minsan nga, sinasabi nila we are in the crust of being a failed state and maybe they have a reason for declaring so.”
