MANILA - One of the easiest crimes to prevent --'akyat bahay'--is also one of the most common in the Philippines, especially during the holidays such as the upcoming Holy Week.

On an episode of "Red Alert" aired Friday, reporter Atom Araullo gave several tips on how to prevent being victimized by criminal elements and what to do when it happens.

First off, with the help of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Araullo advised viewers to invest in a closed-circuit television (CCTV) as it would be vital in identifying thieves and crucial evidence when filing a case.

According to residence safety expert Ted Esguerra, it is also important to have at least two locks for every door in your house. And while it may not be the cheapest option, he also encouraged viewers to invest in a safety alarm system.

"You don't compromise the safety and survival of your family," said Esguerra.

Never leave windows open, added Esguerra.

In the episode, Araullo also played out a simulated scenario where a family is at home when a break-in occurs. He explained the importance of staying calm and the role of the father or head of the family in the negotiation.

If one's hands and feet are bound or tied up, the important thing is to find a way to get on your feet. Then, find an edged surface or a corner where you could loosen the ropes or cut it free.

When a break-in happens, it is also important to gather your family inside a single room and barricade the doors. Hide the children under a bed or inside a closet and then call for help by phoning the police or shouting until you get the attention of your neighbors.

"Importante ang mental toughness din, na maniwala ka na kaya mong gawin," said Araullo. "Pero ang importante ay ma-preserve mo 'yung life mo. Kung sa tantsa mo ay gamit lang naman ang gusto nila, ibigay mo na, basta safe ang iyong pamilya."

"Red Alert" airs every Friday, 4:45 p.m., after "Meteor Garden" on ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Gold.
