MANILA – Will gun-control laws lessen shooting incidents in the Philippines?

Veteran comic Willie Nepomuceno said that he does not feel safe anymore and is now afraid to leave his house after his grandson was shot several times on the morning of January 9.

The incident involving Nepomuceno’s grandson adds to the slew of other shooting incidents in the country recently, many of which were executed in broad daylight and in front of a large crowd.

Facebook users gave mixed responses.

Jeff Madrigal said that gun-control laws will only take away the people’s right to protect themselves.

“Gun-control law?

Otep Reyes disagreed. “Pwede! Wala namang mawawala kung gagawin o ipapa-implement nila ‘yong ganyan. Sige po.”

Gil Tecson, on the other hand, viewed the matter differently.

Roland Frank stressed that for a law to become effective, Filipinos must show participation and cooperation first.

“At the end of the day, the public's participation and cooperation will determine the success of the gun control law. Let's not entrust fully to the law enforcers, let's try to do our share. After all, it's the public who will reap the benefit of a peaceful community.”

On Twitter, netizens are just as divided.

Jenna Termulo (@Jhenna_Termulo) said the law will not be fully effective so long as authorities can be bribed.

jeff barrera (‏@SerJeyBee) agreed with Termulo and answered based on his own experience.

“Laws are useless if not strictly implemented. Dito sa Zamboanga, almost every week may barilan.”

Twitter user X ‏(@gyuseyo) said, “Depende sa higpit ng batas. Kung mahigpit, maiibsan, kung hindi, edi hindi.”
