Political corruption prospers in the Philippines because it is one problem that is not addressed but kicked down the road.
In general people talk about corruption in government but take its consequences lightly. There is no public outrage on deficit and mounting national debt. While it is true that people who are working continue to receive a 13th month pay, worker’s wages have remained flat for years.
While people complain about food prices, rising gas prices, commodity shortages, fare hikes, etc. they are left with no option but take everything as a way of life. Their silence is deafening. While ordinary citizens pay taxes, people who make millions don’t.
Ordinary citizens feel guilty for being dishonest sometimes, but the rich and the powerful consider this moral weakness as a badge of honor. The President of the country does not take any sobriety test for spending the people’s money like a drunken sailor.
