'Thy Womb' fails to hit million-peso mark

Vice Ganda, Kris, Ai Ai headline 'Sisterakas'
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) -- Two staple film franchises, along with Star Cinema's two entries, figured in the top 4 highest-earning movies on the first day of the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

The fantasy-comedy flick "Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako" trailed behind the Wenn V Deramas-directed film "Sisterakas" in box-office earnings, as of the movies' first-day screening last Tuesday.

"Si Agimat" sees the crossover team-up of Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla, Jr. and Vic Sotto as their characters from their respective film series, which have both been part of earlier iterations of the MMFF. The actors are joined by Judy Ann Santos in the film.

Released under Star Cinema, "Sisterakas," meanwhile, features the coming together of Kris Aquino, Vice Ganda and Ai Ai delas Alas.

Both comedy films, along with six other entries to the 2012 MMFF, opened in theaters nationwide on Christmas Day.

According to data based on reports from participating theaters, "Sisterakas" earned P23,110,553.75 in Metro Manila and some provincial theaters, and P16,083,758.90 in other provincial cinemas on its first day.

The comedy film's total first-day-earnings lead over "Si Agimat" is almost P10 million, with the Vice Ganda-starrer turning in P39,194,312.65, compared to the latter's P29,393,219.10.

In Metro Manila and some provincial theaters, "Si Agimat" earned P17,373,002.50 for the duration of the opening day. It earned P12,020,216.60 in other provincial theaters on the same day.

Ranking 3rd in first-day earnings is the family drama "One More Try," which stars Angelica Panganiban, Angel Locsin, Dindong Dantes and Zanjoe Marudo.

With P8,808,249.00 opening-day earnings in Metro Manila, and P4,352,738.40 in provincial theaters, the Ruel Bayani-directed film grossed P13,160,987.40 on Christmas Day.

Like "Si Agimat," a returning film franchise to this year's MMFF is "Shake, Rattle & Roll (SRR)," which ranked fourth on the list.

The 14th installment of the horror film anthology earned P10,579,339.60 nationwide on opening day, having garnered P6,534,619.00 in Metro Manila, and P4,044,720.60 in provincial theaters.

Trailing "SRR" is another horror film "The Strangers" (P4,902,627.00 total), followed by the Emilio Aguinaldo biopic "El Presidente" (P4,244,500.00 total), and the comedy film "Sosy Problems" (P3,036,408.75 total).

Ranking last on the list is the internationally acclaimed "Thy Womb."

At No. 8, the Brillante Mendoza film grossed P908,859.00 on Christmas Day, owing to its Metro Manila screenings. No data for its earnings in provincial theaters was provided.

The awards night of the 38th MMFF will be held on Thursday at the Meralco Theater in Ortigas.
