MANILA - Sunshine Cruz on Thursday said she tried to save her marriage with Cesar Montano before it fell apart after 13 years, but admitted that their relationship reached a dead end.
The 40-year-old actress said she "looked unhealthy" before she pulled the plug in their marriage, recalling that she was "stick thin," weighing only 110 pounds.
"I know that I did everything to save the marriage. It took me 13 years to save it, but na-realize kong talagang walang pupuntahan and we are both miserable already. So I guess it’s time to move on," she said in an interview on ANC's "Headstart."
Cruz has separated from Montano, who she married in 2000 and had 3 children with.
They parted ways in January 2013 due to the actor's alleged affair with model Krista Miller. Cruz filed for annulment before Holy Week in 2014.
She also sued Montano for allegedly raping her, saying she experienced "physical harm, obscene accusations, and grave defamation" under her “very domineering, philandering" husband.
Cruz, who stars in the Kapamilya afternoon drama "Wildflower" as the mother of lead actress Maja Salvador, said she started taking care of herself after her split from Montano.
"That was the time that I realized na teka, umikot ang mundo ko sa isang tao. It's time to take care of myself more, and that was the time na nag-exercise na ako, nagpakulay na ako ng buhok," she said.
After she and her boyfriend, businessman Macky Mathay, marked their first anniversary as a couple in September, Cruz gave advice to women who are struggling to find love.
"If you want your partner or someone to love you, I think you should start from yourself. Kasi daw walang time para mag-exercise, no, that's not an excuse. What is 3 times a week, less than an hour a day? Sabi ko, mahalin mo muna ang sarili mo. If matanggap at mahalin mo ang sarili mo, then it will follow naman, meron nang magmamahal sa 'yo, definitely," she said.
