MANILA, Philippines -- Erich Gonzales is turning a new leaf as an actress as she becomes an action star in an independent film by director Richard Somes.
The Kapamilya actress returns to the indie scene with "Mariposa sa Hawla ng Gabi." The "dark ang gritty" thriller is among the film entries in the ongoing 2012 Cinema One Originals Festival.
According to Somes, the titular character in the film was specifically written for Gonzales, who he had worked with previously in the acclaimed horror film "Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang."
"I thought Erich really suited the lead character of Mariposa and I have already written the script to really suit her personality. Erich will portray a very challenging role here and very different from the ones she has done so far," Somes said.
In "Mariposa," Gonzales portrays a "probinsyana" whose quest to find her long lost sister puts her in challenging situations in the city.
In one scene in the film, according to Somes, the prized Star Magic talent had to skin a monitor lizard, which she overcame without any hint of fear.
Gonzales will also figure in "amazing fight scenes." No body double was tapped for these segments, Somes offered.
"You will really see a 'kickass' Erich in this film," the director said. "There are a lot of compelling scenes in 'Mariposa.' Erich was very fantastic in portraying a really strong woman."
Joining Gonzales in the cast of "Mariposa sa Hawla ng Gabi" are Alfred Vargas, Joel Torre, Mark Gil, Rez Cortes, Maria Isabel Lopez, Dennis Padilla and John Lapus.
The 2012 Cinema One Originals festival runs until December 9 at Robinson’s Galleria Movie World and until December 4 at the Edsa Shangri-La Cineplex.
