MANILA - The full-length trailer of the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival entry, "Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir," was released early this week, showing glimpses of the life and martyrdom of the Filipino saint.
The 90-second reel narrates how Calungsod changed the natives of Marianas Islands, how he fought for his faith, and how it led to his death.
Written and directed by Francis O. Villacorta, "Pedro Calungsod" stars Rocco Nacino in the title role, along with Christian Vazquez, Jestoni Alarcon, and Mercedes Cabral.
Speaking at a press conference held Thurdsay, Nacino told reporters that the role pushed him to become more religious.
"I was talking more to God," he said. "Ang characters ko everyday, they were changing so it was really tiring. It came to the point na parang nawawala na ako, hindi ko na alam kung sino ako pag-uwi ko. May times na kinakausap ko si God, asking for help, asking for him to guide whatever actions, decisions I was doing."
Alarcon, who will make his independent film debut with the project, portrays Captain Juan de Sta. Cruz. "Tinangap ko ito bilang first indie film kasi talagang nagustuhan ko 'tong role na 'to," he said.
"Lahat ng sakripisyo, ginawa namin para matapos ng maayos, on time. At the same time, gusto rin talaga naming maiparating sa kabataan para makilala nila ng husto kung sino si Pedro Calungsod dahil itong ating pangalawang Filipino saint, importanteng makilala," he added.
