Paolo Valenciano admits that it was hard for him growing up with all the expectations of living up to being the eldest son of Gary Valenciano.
“Being the son of Gary V was bad for me in high school, even my teachers would say na why I wasn’t like him or they would compare us. But when I got into college and started performing na, it was easier and better na for me,” he relates.
But the theater actor and lead singer of the rock band Salamin admits that performing has always been in his genes.
“I just woke up one day and realized that I just like watching people dance. I think it’s a cool thing but I feel like I can’t express myself that well through dancing. I love performing. That’s why I was into theater acting, I loved singing and I love performing. It’s one thing that I think I’ve been called to do,” he says.
Paolo has chosen singing while he lets younger brother Gabriel take the spotlight when it comes to dancing. The close-knit brothers also share the same passion for music.
“I feel like I cannot express myself through dancing so that’s why I did not get into that. I have nothing against it. You’d be surprised but me and my brother listen to the same kind of music. It’s really weird that we both listen to the same kind of music but he dresses that way, hip-hop, and I sing heavy metal music and I dress like this, but were brothers,” he adds.
Although he turned 24 this year, Paolo still gets a kick out of being mistaken for a minor, especially during a his flight back home after doing a show with his dad abroad.
“I got carded when I requested for wine in an airplane coming home from Indonesia. I used to find it to be a bad thing but now I think it’s a positive thing,” he muses.
Paolo also shares why finishing school and being on the road and performing with his dad has made their bond closer than before. “Touring with my dad was a different experience when I was in college. I could never do it because I had school. But since I graduated na, it’s my first time to actually go on tour with him this year,” he says.
Another thing that Paolo shares with his dad is a love for collecting toys. “My dad used to collect G.I. Joe action figures, ako naman, I like mga X-men figures,” he admits.
Paolo shares that he values family time more than anything and shares what his family likes to do when they’re together.
“We like to go out and eat. That’s basically the only time we get to hang out together as a family kasi nga everyone’s very busy. We like Italian food. So yung Sunday night, sacred sa amin kasi it’s our family time,” he says.
Paolo also shares some good news for fans of his band. “Salamin is working on a second album. That’s what we’ve been busy with lately. No regular gigs right now kasi we’re really concentrating on finishing the new album,” he says.
