MANILA - Young actor James Reid finally broke his silence on why he called off his relationship with former girlfriend, singer Ericka Villongco, reiterating that his onscreen partner, Nadine Lustre, has nothing to do with it.
In an interview on the sidelines of Lustre's 21st birthday bash held Friday, Reid said the decision was mutual. He also described the "bad break-up" as the "better way for everyone."
"I wanted take my showbiz career seriously and I found it too hard at the same time --handling both a relationship and work --and I had such a big opportunity. I didn't want to waste it. She [Villongco] understood naman," he said.
The former couple broke up in March, a month before the release of "Diary ng Panget," the actor's first film with Lustre. It was earlier rumored that Lustre affected the relationship.
On Thursday, Villoncgo quashed the speculation, saying she even spoke with the actress after the breakup. She also said that Reid has also been "loyal, faithful, [and] very loving" throughout the three-year relationship.
In a separate interview on Friday, Lustre was asked for her reaction to the rumors.
She said: "Hindi ko naman kailangan i-explain sa kanila iyon kasi hindi naman talaga. Kung ayaw naman nila maniwala, hindi ko na problema iyon. We all know that truth naman talaga."
The actress also responded to the comments made by Villongco, in which she said that she will be okay should Lustre and Reid become a couple in real life.
"Masaya kasi at least, kahit papano, kahit hindi maganda 'yung break-up nila ni James, somehow, parang may suporta na rin siya sa akin at kay James," Lustre said.
