MANILA, Philippine – Rocker and actor Marc Abaya admits that he will certainly miss his mother, director Marilou Diaz-Abaya, but he said he is also glad that she is in a better place now.
According to Marc, the multi-awarded film and TV director was able to see everyone she loves before she succumbed to cardio-pulmonary arrest on Monday night after years of battling breast cancer.

“We we whispering in her ear na mommy we love you very much. You can go, you have to rest. Naramdaman po namin ng kapatid ko and 'yung everyone na nasa kuwarto na parang at peace si mama. 'Yun ang mahalaga, nakita niya lahat ng tao na mahalaga sa kanya sa pamilya, sa industriya. Everybody that she needed to see, nakita po niya,” he said.
Marc considers himself fortunate to have had a supportive mom.
He said the "Jose Rizal" director originally wanted him to become a priest or a doctor but she never expressed disappointment when he decided to pursue a music career instead.
“She’s always been supportive. Nagsimula po ako as a musician kasi 'yun kami ng kapatid ko eh. It’s not that we didn’t want to do what mom did. Very supportive si mommy so she tried to make us listen to classical music, pinakinggan namin rock,” he related.
Marc said her mom was also the one who guided him when he decided to try acting.
“She was the one who pointed the way to Johnny Delgado and Nonie Buencamino. Pagkatapos noon, pinapanood ni mommy mga shows ko, nagki-critique, nagpapaasa (laughs),” he said.
Marc said he also never felt pressured just because he’s the son of a critically acclaimed director.
“Si mom never raised us to think that way. Mom and dad were very supportive of us, to make ourselves, to find ourselves. The only pressure if ever is to be the best we can be, to exceed excellence but there was never any pressure from our parents,” he said.
Asked how he would describe her, Marc said: “She is brilliant... too many words, brilliant, beautiful, wise, kind. She’s Marilou Diaz-Abaya.”
