Filmmaker Jowee Morel said he prefers to screen his most beloved films in censorship-free venues like the Cine Adarna of the University of the Philippines Film Institute or the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
According to Morel, he still plans to submit his films to festivals abroad where rules usually bar films that have had a commercial run in their country of origin. This is why his film "Latak", starring Cannes Most Beautiful Actress winner (according to a foreign website) actress Mercedes Cabral in her first sexy role, is being shown Saturday night at Cine Adarna.
Morel hopes that a CCP screening will soon follow.
"Gusto ko rin sana na sa mga venue lang na tulad ng UP ipalabas ang ‘Latak’ para special screening lang. Kasi, may mga rules ang ibang international film festivals na hindi sila tumatanggap ng mga entries na naipalabas na commercially sa mga country of origin ng production. Isasali namin kasi sa mga foreign film event ang pelikula kaya maingat kami sa exposure nito. Mahal na mahal ko na ang aking pangwalo, actually, na pelikula," said Morel.
Among Morel's films that have become controversial are "Mga Paru-Parong Rosas," "Mona Singapore Escort" ni Iza Calzado at ang "When A Gay Man Loves" ni Romano Vasquez.
Morel believes that by tackling social issues like drug addiction ("Latak"); gayness and bisexuality ("When A Gay Man Loves"; "Mga Paru-Parong Rosas"); abortion and prostitution ("Mona Singapore Escort"), he is helping audiences grapple with the harsh realities of life--instead of giving them escapist fantasies.
Morel is also set to have a movie marathon screening in November where his yet unscreened works, including the distinctive "Moving Dreams" that has a documentary feel and is about his own oddyssey as a filmmaker.
