Kris not back in Joey’s arms

MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino's sister Kris Aquino-Yap thanked The Philippine Star columnist Ricky Lo in a Twitter message for clarifying speculations that she is back with former boyfriend, politician Joey Marquez.

On September 17, in the Demand and Supply column of The Philippine Star’s Business Section, Boo Chanco wrote a piece entitled “Is Kris back with Joey M?”

In that story, Chanco shared that he had dinner with some business people on September 13 and surprisingly, they did not talk about the country’s vital economic problems but rather, Kris Aquino’s personal life issues.

Chanco, a business columnist, discussed at length how Aquino has allegedly been making the wrong choices of partners.

Chanco likened Aquino to Inang Bayan (Philippines), someone who is full of promise, who could be anything she wants to be, and yet, keeps on making the wrong choices.

“Phillip Salvador, Joey Marquez, Robin Padilla… gee, Kris, why do you always choose men who any right thinking girl with your pedigree and breeding should find difficult to introduce to your mother?” Chanco said in his column.

He, however, clarified he thought it’s absurd for Aquino to be back in Marquez’s arms.

“'No,' I volunteered… 'that’s absurd. Kris can’t be going back to Joey… not after that tearful live feed from the Aquino home in Times Street,'” he said.

How the rumor started

As a response to this, Lo reportedly sent Aquino a message to clarify the issue and to ask how it must have started.

In his September 25 Funfare column, Lo quoted the exact messages Aquino sent him in reply to his query.

“No, I haven’t seen him since the wedding of Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago (Almost three years ago, in Tagaytay Highlands. --- RFL). Last week on Pilipinas Win Na Win (PWNW), I greeted Joey Manahan, a nephew of Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) who is a Hawaii State Representative. He was really nice to us when we went to Hawaii last year. He is up for reelection. I said, ‘Thank you, Joey, for being so good to me and my family and for taking good care of us. Good luck.’ That’s why the rumor started. Immediately after the show, people started asking me na.

“I just wonder why people are so quick to portray me as the malanding nakihiwalay and James as the mabait, naaping asawa? When all of last week ako ang nakabantay kay Bimby in Makati Med when he was confined from Wednesday to Saturday. Walang narinig ang tao from me na akong dakila and James didn’t even offer a peso for medical bills. (Portions deleted by me. --- RFL) Kaya lang exhausted na ako with people wanting to just see the worst in me.”

Lo also gave an unsolicited advice to business people.

“Friendly advice to businessmen: It might be better if they monitor the country’s economy, the rise and fall of the peso vis-à-vis the dollar, instead of how or who Kris’ heart is beating for,” Lo said.

As a sign of gratitude, Aquino tweeted on Saturday, saying she is thankful to Lo for helping her clarify things regarding the spreading rumor.

“Thanks tito Ricky Lo for clarification today. How sad for some people who must have boring, unproductive lives that they can spend so much time telling me how to live my life & judging me not based on my present but events from 7 & 15 yrs ago respectively. I have 1 simple answer, until the day u'll willingly educate, feed, provide health care & shelter my 2 sons then dictate to me what my work should be & how I should live my life. And rather than dwell on what my past is, I think I'm the perfect example of how much I've been able to learn from my past & have a productive present,” Aquino tweeted.
