MANILA - Vilma Santos, who portrayed Darna in several hit movies in the '70s, has full trust that Angel Locsin will do justice to the role in a new film touted as the biggest in local cinema.
The screen veteran and Batangas governor expressed her support for Locsin, the current girlfriend of her son Luis Manzano, in a joint interview on Friday shortly before the Alay-Lakad charity event in the province.
"Oh my god! The mom and the girlfriend are both Darna in the life of my son!" Santos told ABS-CBN News' MJ Felipe, when asked for her reaction to Locsin potraying Darna anew in an Erik Matti-directed movie.
Produced by Star Cinema, the still-untitled film was described by Locsin as a first in Philippine cinema in terms of scale and special effects.
Locsin, who first played Darna in a 2005 TV series, considers the Mars Ravelo-created character instrumental to her success in showbiz.
In a media gathering in June announcing the new project, an emotional Locsin said: "Ang laki ng respeto ko kay Darna. Iningatan ko si Darna noong ginagawa ko palang siya. And kahit noong hindi ko na siya ginagawa, isinapuso ko talaga si Darna."
Asked what advice she can give Locsin on taking the role anew, Santos only said she is confident that Darna will be a perfect fit for the actress, as seen the first time she wore iconic red battle gear.
"Do I need to [give her advice]? I don't need to explain anything, I don't need to say something. Kilala natin si Angel. Nag-Darna na siya sa TV," Santos said.
"Ano pang pag-uusapan natin? Pag sinabi mong Darna, bagay kay Angel 'yon. At pag nag-Darna kasi, dapat believable. Ito siya, o! Believable!"
