MANILA – It was Alex Gonzaga who broke the news to Daniel Matsunaga about the engagement of his former girlfriend, Heart Evangelista, to Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero.

According to “The Buzz” host Toni Gonzaga, her sister went straight to Matsunaga during the “Pinoy Big Brother” after-party to tell him the news.

“Right after the Big Night, nagkaroon kami ng party Sunday night. Ang unang unang sinabi ni Alex sa kanya, ‘Uy engaged na si Heart.’ Sabi ni Alex, ‘Ate, nasaan si Daniel? Sasabihin ko na talaga sa kanya.’ Paglapit niya ‘Engaged na si Heart!’ Tinanong ko anong sabi. Sabi daw, ‘Hindi siya naniwala eh,’” Toni narrated.

The Brazilian-Japanese model, however, was quick to clarify that he believed the news right away although it came as a surprise to him.

“Naniwala ako. Pero siyempre nahiya ako. Kasi first news sa outside world, ['yun agad]. Oh sige, thank you,” he said laughing.

Escudero proposed to Evangelista the night before Matsunaga was proclaimed winner of the ABS-CBN reality show.

Saying he and Evangelista are still friends up to this day, Matsunaga said: “Masaya ako para sa kanila kasi me and Heart, we are still friends even after our breakup na matagal na, three years ago. Masaya ako para sa kanya. Nakilala ko si Chiz. I wish them the best and may God bless their relationship sa future.”

Citing "cultural differences," Evangelista confirmed her breakup with Matsunaga in April 2012 after more than a year of being a couple. At the time, the actress had just spent a vacation in Matsunaga's hometown in Brazil. She stressed, however, that his family was kind and accommodating to her.

Evangelista, 29, and Escudero, 44, became officially a couple on July 30, 2012, but the senator only confirmed that status of their relationship in October that same year.

‘Not a Filipino’

Meanwhile, Matsunaga only laughed off critics saying he does not deserve to win “PBB” because he has no Filipino blood.

“Tama 'yung sinabi ng kapatid ko. Sabi niya we don’t choose where we’re born but we choose where we belong. Totoo eh. Siya, may asawa siya na Pilipino. I have a family na Filipino. We love this country that’s why God had a purpose for us to be here today,” he said.

“Talagang we love everything about the Philippines; that’s why we live here. We chose to stay here. Kaya talagang pusong Pinoy. Pero kung kailangan niyo ng dugo, sige pupunta ako sa Makati Med, papalagay ako ng dugo [na Pilipino],” he added in jest.
