Richard Yap and his family led relief operations as 'Team Yap' at an evacuation center in Brgy. Sapang Bayan in Calumpit, Bulacan on Thursday morning
MANILA -- A relief drive led by actor Richard Yap at an evacuation center in Bulacan turned into a fan meet of sorts on Thursday, as the "Be Careful With My Heart" star elicited shrieks from storm-hit residents there.
The 46-year-old Kapamilya actor brought and distributed relief goods to some 1,000 displaced flood victims taking temporary shelter at a covered court in Brgy. Sapang Bayan in Calumpit, Bulacan.
Yap was accompanied by his two children -- aged 16 and 9 -- his wife Melody, as well as friends and colleagues from showbiz, in lending help to residents affected by this week's torrential rains brought by the southwest monsoon and tropical storm "Maring."
The actor and his company all wore black shirts imprinted with "Team Yap Gives Back," as they interacted with the flood victims.
"Alam naman nating maraming naapektuhan dito ng habagat, so as much as possible, we'd like to give back for all the blessings that we have," Yap told ABS-CBN News' Mario Dumaual.
According to the municipal government of Calumpit in a post on its official Facebook page, Brgy. Sabang Bayan was hit with floods as deep as 3 feet on Wednesday. As of Thursday afternoon, some areas in the barangay were still waist deep in floods.
"Kaya we decided to do it here, kahit nandoon ako sa Taguig side. Alam ko marami na raw nakatulong doon eh, kaya dito muna tayo. Kasi hindi pa masyado nakarating dito ang tulong," Yap added.
In Taguig City early this week, over 2,000 individuals were dispersed into 12 evacuation centers also due to the floods.
Maintaining his relief operation is not for "publicity purposes," Yap called on others to continue helping victims of the latest disaster to hit the country.
"Para sa amin, maliit lang na bagay kasi alam naman natin no matter how much we give, kulang pa rin. So for all the people out there na gusto magbigay, you can do it in your own little way also. Pag tayong lahat nagtulung-tulong, malaking tulong na rin 'yon," he said.
