Lea dares Sarah G., Aga Muhlach, apl.de.ap, Bamboo
MANILA - Broadway actress Lea Salonga has taken up the highly popular "ice bucket challenge" and dared Sarah Geronimo and other "The Voice of the Philippines" coaches to do the same.
In a video posted by Salonga on Thursday night, she explained that an uncle of her husband, Robert Charles Chien, passed away due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) "not very long ago."
"It is out of love for him that we are both doing this," said Salonga as she pointed to Chien, who was partly seen in the video holding the bucket of ice water.
The "Miss Saigon" star added: "We have seen what it (ALS) can do and how it can impact a family, so this is why I'm doing this and experiencing temporary discomfort for something very important."
While rules vary, the ice bucket challenge generally has participants recording themselves getting poured with ice water on the head. The video is supposed to be published online within 24 hours of being challenged.
Before getting drenched, a participant can tag other people to take up the challenge. Those who refuse to do the dare are expected to donate to the ALS Association in the United States, or any foundation pursuing research on the disease.
However, as it has unfolded on social media, celebrities tagged to do the challenge still make significant donations despite agreeing to take up the dare.
Tagged by Il Divo singer Urs Buhler, Salonga passed on the challenge to the following: "Glee" actor Darren Criss, her former leading man Aga Muhlach, and her fellow "The Voice of the Philippines" coaches Geronimo, Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, and Bamboo Manalac.
