MANILA – Derek Ramsay admitted for the first time on Wednesday that he was indeed married in 2002 and that he has an 11-year-old son.
Ramsay’s admission came on the heels of reports that he is facing raps for violating Republic Act No. 9262, otherwise known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act, supposedly filed by his wife, Mary Christine Jolly.
In a statement released Wednesday, the former Kapamilya actor stressed there are only two things that are true in Jolly’s complaint-affidavit, which he lambasted as “replete with deliberate lies and facts intended to be misleading and deceptive.”
“First, that Mary Christine Jolly and I were married in 2002, a marriage that I was then told, was not valid, for various reasons. Atty. Joji Alonso has subsequently explained to me that the information given me about the status of my marriage, is erroneous and that a marriage unless annulled, remains to be valid,” he said in the statement.
Continuing further, Ramsay added: “Second, that I have an eleven-year old son named Austin Gabriel Ramsay.”
But Ramsay said he only confirmed that Austin is indeed his son in August 2011.
“Since then, I wanted to know my son first and keep my relationship with him, private. Austin was just an 8-year-old boy then and he would not be able to comprehend the possible media curiosity about him, especially since he was then new to the country and about to pursue his education here. Given the circumstances between Mary and I, which is far from ideal, I had to protect Austin first,” he said.
Ramsay said he felt it was his obligation to protect his son and maintain a private relationship with him.
“I have nothing further to add. Everything that needs to be said is contained in the Counter Affidavit which I have submitted today,” he said.
It would be recalled that in 2011, the issue about Ramsay’s reported marriage to Jolly was among the controversies that rocked his then relationship with Angelica Panganiban.
The two celebrities have eventually split up.
