MANILA, Philippines -- As with many mothers, singer Regine Velasquez also went through a period of depression after giving birth to son Nathaniel James.

In an interview with the entertainment magazine Starstudio, Velasquez said her post-partum depression was triggered by her difficulty breastfeeding her first child with singer-comedian Ogie Alcasid.
"'Yung post-partum talaga, lahat naman [ng nanay] will go through that, iba-iba lang ang trigger," she told Starstudio in its August 2012 issue.
"Mine was hindi nagla-latch si Nate sa akin," she said, referring to her son's difficulty to feed from her breast.
"Pero parang na-stress si Nate, and I was also stressing out. I knew I loved him, pero ang weird ng feeling kasi walang attachment," Velasquez added.
She had already been at the hospital for three days, and the environment had only aggravated the stress, Velasquez recalled.
"Umiiyak ako and I didn't know what to do," she said. "At saka nase-stress ako kasi I could see na he was already losing weight. Awang-awa ang pinsan ko sa sa 'kin kasi umiiyak na ako."
By the fourth day, she and Alcasid had decided to bring Nate home, and sought other options to feed their child without compromising his nourishment. For a time, Nate was fed with breast milk through a bottle.
But even as this provided a convenient alternative, Velasquez said she "did not give up" in feeding Nate the best way possible.
"Hindi talaga ako nag-give up. So after three weeks, nag-latch na siya -- and as soon as nag-latch nawala na 'yung depression ko. Nawala na 'yung baby blues ko," she said.
"At saka 'pag nag-breastfeed ka, 'di ba may nare-release na feel-good hormones? Endorphins ba ang tawag doon? So I felt much better. Happy siya, happy na ako," she added.
For almost a year since Nate was born in November, Velasquez passed on a number of professional engagements to spend time with her first-born.
"Right now kasi, parang walang mas importante sa akin kung hindi 'yung asawa at anak ko," she said.
