MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – Kim Atienza, “Matanglawin” host and “TV Patrol’s” resident weatherman, is now in stable condition after suffering a mild stroke on Wednesday morning.

Atienza’s wife, Fely, said he is confined at the Makati Medical Center.

She said Atienza, popularly known as Kuya Kim, is conscious and all his vital signs are stable.

Atienza’s father, former environment secretary Lito Atienza, announced that his eldest son’s recovery is fast, and even his doctors “are really, really amazed with the way he recovered.”

“Mabilis ang recovery. Fantastic ito si Kim…. His speech is normal, ‘yong kanyang thinking process is normal, ang movement is normal. But he has to take it easy,” Lito said.

The elder Atienza said he was shocked when told that Kuya Kim had a stroke, noting that his son has no illness.

“Nahilo siya, na-disorient. Ganoon ang epekto ng severe fatigue that leads to a mild stroke,” he said.

Fely added that Kuya Kim will still have to undergo a series of tests including MRI and CT scan. He will be under observation in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Dizziness

The young Atienza was rushed to the Philippine General Hospital around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Fely recounted that her husband was on his way to ABS-CBN in Quezon City when he complained of dizziness. His driver rushed him to PGH where it was declared that he had a mild stroke.

He was transferred to Makati Medical Center around noon.

Atienza’s family, friends and colleagues, including ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Maria Ressa, visited Kuya Kim in the hospital Wednesday morning.

Donita Rose, Atienza’s co-host on “Umagang Kay Ganda,” said he was in “jolly spirits.”

“He’s in jolly spirits but please continue to pray for him kasi he does need a lot of rest,” she said.

The family of Kuya Kim is asking for prayers for his speedy recovery.

Netizens wish Kim fast recovery

Participants in the live chat of TV Patrol were concerned about Atienza.

There were at least 10 comments about Atienza in the chat at tvpatrol.abs-cbnnews.com, where a discussion runs simultaneously with the nightly live streaming of the ABS-CBN flagship newscast TV Patrol.

"Musta si Kuya Kim? My prayers," said chat participant 'KMV.'

Chatter 'MBello' said, "Kuya Kim, pagaling ka agad. We will pray for your immediate comeback to Showtime and TV Patrol."

There were also some who posted "get-well-soon" messages for Atienza in their Twitter accounts. 'Liannemae14' and 'mikhailaudier' separately said they hope Atienza would get well soon.

Weatherman

Kuya Kim’s initial crack at broadcasting happened in 2004 when he replaced the late weatherman Ernie Baron as weather forecaster of “TV Patrol.”

Since his performance was very fluid and professional, Atienza was featured and given his own segment in ABS-CBN’s early morning show, “Magandang Umaga, Pilipinas” in 2005. When the program was reformatted, he joined the group of “Umagang Kay Ganda” in the same year.

After a few years of impressive broadcast journalism, Atienza was awarded his own full-length TV show, “Matanglawin,” an educational show aired every Sunday on ABS-CBN.

It features interesting discoveries in nature and other environmental phenomenon.

According to Wikipilipinas, Atienza has been a passionate animal lover since he was a kid. He started to collect animals, including queer pets, at age 11. He has since mastered the tiniest information about any pet and the natural science.

Atienza is the eldest of 2 boys. Being a health buff, he taught aerobics and weightlifting on TV before he went to sports casting. –With a report from Jing Castañeda, ABS-CBN News
