MANILA - Patrick Garcia enlisted the help of family members and his girlfriend's kin to pull off his surprise wedding proposal, which made headlines on Monday.
Speaking with DZMM's Jobert Sucaldito and Ahwel Paz, the 32-year-old actor said he also asked their pastor for permission to propose to his non-showbiz girlfriend, Nikka Martinez, before the start of a church service that day.
"Kinausap ko 'yung pastor namin kung puwede mag-propose ako sa kanya sa service. Pumayag," Garcia said. Tapos kinausap ko siyempre 'yung mom ni Nikka. Siyempre, kakuntsaba ko 'yung sister ko tsaka 'yung mom ko. Tapos, iyon, invited 'yung family."
Explaining why he decided to propose in church, Garcia said he and Martinez consider the relationship with God as the foundation of their relationship.
"Kasi, siyempre, dahil Kristiyano ako and I'm taking my relationship with the Lord seriously... I discovered some things about the Lord. Siyempre, I want to make things right with her and, of course, with the Lord," he said.
Garcia added: "The Lord, siya 'yung na sa sentro ng relationship namin. Siya 'yung foundation namin. Without the Lord, we don't have a strong foundation."
The actor had no doubts in answering whether he sees Martinez as the woman he will spend the rest of his life with. "Siyempre naman. Sa kanya ako nag-propose, eh. Siya na 'yung babaeng gusto ko makasama habang buhay," he said.
Before Martinez, Garcia was in a relationship with actress Jennylyn Mercado, with whom he has a son, four-year-old Alex Jazz.
Garcia said he hopes to have three more kids with Martinez, in addition to their first, Chelsea, who they welcomed in March last year.
Asked if he and Martinez have already set a wedding date, Garcia answered: "Well, actually, we were talking about it kanina, making plans. I like sana mga next year, pero, you know, we're still deciding on the date and the time, the motif, kung sino ii-inivte."
