MANILA – Jennylyn Mercado said only time will tell if she and her former boyfriend, TV host Luis Manzano, could mend ties and be friends again.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News and other reporters on the sidelines of the Yahoo! Celebrity Awards, Mercado said every breakup is painful and only time could heal the wounds left open by a past relationship.
"I know masakit kapag breakup talaga. Mahirap makipaghiwalay sa taong talagang nakasama mo nang matagal at mahal mo. Pero time lang ang makakapagsabi kung kailan kayo magiging ready na para sa isa't isa, maging friends ulit," she said.
"Siguro ang pinaka-secret lang is time. Yun lang. Panahon lang ang makakapagsabi kung kailan kayo magiging okay ulit," she added.
Last month, Mercado remained evasive when asked about Manzano’s plans to settle down with his current girlfriend, actress Angel Locsin.
"Wala muna. Wala. Ayoko muna pag-usapan. Wala na ako doon," the 27-year-old actress said, laughing.
"I wish them well... I wish them well," she added.
Mercado confirmed her separation from Manzano in late 2013, after two years of being a couple. Neither shared the reason behind the breakup, although both were quick to deny that a third party was involved.
A year into their relationship in November 2012, Manzano referred to Mercado as "the one" and even expressed excitement to settle down with the actress.
Manzano and Locsin, meanwhile, got back together in February this year, a month after the "Darna" star controversially admitted in a press conference that she is still in love with the TV host four years after they parted ways.
Before reconciling with Manzano, whom she admitted to avoiding for two years, Locsin was in a relationship with football player Phil Younghusband. Locsin confirmed her breakup with Younghusband in October last year, the same month Mercado and Manzano admitted their separation.
The 33-year-old Manzano has said he and Locsin are likely to get married in 2015 and has even tapped TV host Kris Aquino, among others, as a principal sponsor in the wedding.
Friends with other exes
While Mercado and Manzano have yet to rekindle their friendship, the GMA-7 talent noted that she has remained friends with all of her former boyfriends. The actress particularly mentioned Mark Herras, who was her first onscreen partner when she first joined showbiz.
“Gusto lang naming ipakita sa lahat ng supporters at siyempre yung mga fans namin ni Mark na yung relationship namin, yung friendship namin, talagang solid pa rin,” she said.
“Gusto namin maging role models sa lahat ng love teams, sa magkakaibigan, or sa mag-ex na solid pa rin talaga kahit anong pinagdaanan namin. Kahit anong mangyari, kami pa rin ang magkasama,” she added.
Among her exes, Mercado said she is most comfortable with Herras.
“Para ko nang kapatid yan. Parang pamilya na kami,” she said. “Yung mga ex ko naman, mga friends ko naman. Friends ko naman sila.”
Aside from Herras, Mercado also had a relationship with Patrick Garcia, with whom she has a son.
