Cebuano kid with 'angelic' voice opens 'The Voice' semis
MANILA - Cebu native Winston "Ton-Ton" Cabiles Jr. opened the semi-finals of "The Voice Kids" on Saturday with a performance dubbed as "angelic" by coach and mentor, Lea Salonga.
During the live shows held at Resorts World Manila, the 11-year-old serenaded the crowd of hundreds with a soothing rendition of the late Michael Jackson's hit, "One Day in Your Life."
"You have no idea kung gaano ako ka-proud sa iyo," Broadway star Salonga said.
"Very improved performer ka nga. You just got better and better and better, and watching you there, you have the angelic voice among the six, that's just your quality. Tonight, with how you sang, bumuka 'yung langit para sa iyo," she added.
Likewise, coach Bamboo Manalac was also full of praise for Cabiles. The OPM rock star said that the song choice 'perfectly' matched the Cebuano's personality.
"The way you delivered it. It matches your personality, who you are. Pinagusapan natin last time 'yung aura mo, nandoon pa rin 'yun eh. You just have that [quality]," said Manalac.
Meeting his idol
Before his live performance, Cabiles, a self-confessed Vhong Navarro fan, received a message from his idol.
The "It's Showtime" co-host, in a recorded message, said that he is extremely proud of the young performer because not only does he possess a unique talent, he also finds the time to help his mother sell street food.
"Natutuwa ako dahil bilang isang bata ay tinutulungan mo ang nanay mo na magbenta ng street food. Isa kang mabuting anak sa iyong nanay," Navarro said.
"Tuloy mo lang 'yan pangarap mo. Kasi baka 'yan ang makatulong sa iyo pagdating ng panahon. Good luck," he added.
