MANILA - Before clinching a spot in the semi-finals of ABS-CBN's "The Voice Kids," nine-year-old Lyca Gairanod helped her mother scavenge junk to sell -- and by performing for her neighbors for extra cash.
A YouTube video of Lyca singing Willie Revillame's "I Love You" is now making the rounds online, more than a year since it was originally uploaded in February 2013.
Uploaded by user Cherrlyn Argete, the video's description reads: "She's only 8 years old and she does junk collecting for a living. Pumupunta siya dito sa bahay upang humingi ng mga bote at pagkain. Habang nakain sila ng kapatid niya, naririnig namin siyang kumakanta so naisipan naming pakantahin siya."
According to the video's statistics, the spike in its viral spread coincided with the Lyca advancing into the Top 6 of "The Voice Kids" as seen in last Saturday's episode.
As of writing, the video already had over 57,000 views.
In one of the Blind Auditions episode of "The Voice Kids," Lyca's mother, Maria Nessel, emotionally shared that she scavenges junk for a living, while her husband is a fisherman,
Lyca, in her profile interview, said she assists her mother willingly. She shared that a part of what they earn from scavenging, she uses for "baon" to school.
"Kami po ay nangangalakal pag wala pong pasok. Ang ginagawa po namin, nanghihingi ng mga bote. Minsan, pinapakanta, binibigyan ng pera. Minsan, pagkain.
"Hindi naman po ako pinipilit ng ng nanay ko mangalakal, pero po ginugusto ko lang po para magkabaon po kami," said Lyca, who hails from Tanza, Cavite.
Asked which performer she idolizes, Lyca identified pop star Sarah Geronimo -- who she is now representing, along with 12-year-old Darren Espanto, in the semi-finals leg of "The Voice Kids."
For her Blind Audition, Lyca performed Aegis' "Halik." In The Sing-Offs, she convinced Geronimo to pick her with a Tagalog rendition of Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father."
Hosted by Alex Gonzaga and Luis Manzano, "The Voice Kids" will have its Top 6 artists perform starting this weekend.
