MANILA - Early favorite Darren Espanto, along with 2 other young artists from the team of Sarah Geronimo, electrified the Saturday telecast of "The Voice Kids" with a performance of a One Direction hit.
The three had the judges and the crowd dancing to the tune of "What Makes You Beautiful" during the second round of the night's Battles.
"Sa tanda kong ito, kinilig ako sa inyong apat," said coach Lea Salonga after the group's performance.
Pointing to Espanto, she added: "Even from your blind auditions and 'yung performance mo dito, you still had control over your singing kahit na sumasayaw sayaw ka diyan. It was just fun to watch."
The 13-year-old from Canada was also singled out by coach Bamboo Manalac, saying the young singer's experience helped him edge out both Sam Shoaf and twins JM and JC Urquico.
"Enjoy na enjoy kami sa performance ninyo," commended Geronimo, when asked to chose one among the three.
"Si Darren, experience-wise, talagang hinog na hinog ka na eh," she said.
"Kasi nahihirapan siya na ang baba nung kanta para sa kanya. So sabi ko, hanapan mo, gawan mo ng paraan kung paano ma-hihighlight pa rin yung ganda ng boses mo at nagawa mo," she explained.
Geronimo went on to chose the fan-favorite. Moments after the announcement, Espanto's name immediately became one of the worldwide trends on the microblogging site Twitter.
"The Voice Kids," hosted by Luis Manzano and Alex Gonzaga, airs Saturdays at 6:45 p.m. and on Sundays at 7:30 p.m.
