Former child star makes mark in 'MMK' episode

MANILA, Philippines -- An alumnus of kiddie comedy show "Goin' Bulilit" has finally made her transition into a dramatic actress with no less than 40% of national TV households tuned in to her controversial portrayal.

Jane Oineza as Nene in "Maalaala Mo Kaya"

Teen actress Jane Oineza topbilled an SPG-rated episode of drama anthology "Maalaala Mo Kaya" titled "Manika," which finally aired on June 30.

According to the TV ratings date of Kantar Media, the episode earned a 40% national TV rating during its timeslot, the highest overall among the TV programs over the weekend.

"Manika" and Oineza were also among the worldwide trending topics on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Netizens were all praises for the young actress' portrayal of the abused Nene, the teenager who was allowed by her mother (Angel Aquino) to be repeatedly sexually abused by her live-in partner.

"Thank you so much for all the positive feedback. I also want to thank ABS-CBN, Direk Nuel Naval, and to 'MMK' for giving me the chance to show my talent," Oineza said, expressing her gratitude for the positive feedback on her portrayal.

Despite the grim topic of the episode, she said she hopes that there were lessons imparted through her portrayal of Nene.

"We hope that Nene's story served as an eye-opener for all of us -- that drugs will not result to anything good and that despite all the hardships, we should not lose hope and our faith in God," she said.

Researched by Mae Rose Balanay, "Manika" was written by Benson Logronio, and directed by Nuel Naval.
