MANILA - Award-winning singer Jed Madela revealed on Wednesday his real age during a live interview and received praise from TV hosts Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda for his honesty on the subject.
Madela, who is celebrating his birthday on July 14, was greeted in advance by the co-hosts, with Aquino asking whether he is turning 34.
"Plus-plus," Madela said, laughing. "I'm turning 37."
Visibly surprised, Aquino expressed appreciation for his being upfront with his real age. "Ay, bongga! At least, I love you for being honest, na may plus-plus. See, how honest. Kasi 'yung declared age was three years younger," she told Madela.
Abunda added: "Ang galing... I knew it was 34. Thank you for being upfront and being very honest."
In several articles on him online, Madela's birthday is listed as July 14, 1980, putting his current age at 33.
Madela rose to fame in 2005 when he became the first Filipino to become grand champion in the World Championships of Performing Arts, besting 3,000 other international contestants.
He has since released 6 albums under Universal Records, and one, titled "All Original," under the ABS-CBN record label Star Records.
In his interview, Madela also clarified a recent statement he made about some celebrities who get to perform in big venues such as the Araneta Coliseum, supposedly despite little experience in singing compared to his years in the business.
"I respect everybody who wants to perform," he said. "I respect every entertainer who wants to give a good show. Siguro, it's in my heart as a singer, as a performer na when they get to perform in big places like that, I'm happy for them."
Madela emphasized: "Walang arrogance, walang tampo."
"Ako, big venue, small venue, as long at there are people watching who want to listen to me sing, I'm happy," he added.
Following a string of successful concerts, Madela will stage this time a two-night show at the Music Museum in San Juan City starting July 4. At "All Requests," he will perform songs requested by his fans through social media leading up to the night of the concert.
