Although his first home network for four years had laid out its plans for his career, Cuenca said it was his desire to make a leap as an actor that prompted him to sign with ABS-CBN.
"Meron naman ding plano 'yung GMA para sa'kin noon and sa totoo lang that was my whole learning experience," Cuenca said in an interview on "Showbiz Inside Report" aired Saturday.
"But I wanted, kinakailangan ko something with substance. I wanted to act na talaga, and gusto ko na talaga ipakita sa tao na handa na ako, hinog na ako for this. And ABS was willing to give me that break," Cuenca added.
Cuenca recounted a particular instance that motivated him to become a better actor, and subsequently transfer networks.
"There was this one show that I did -- syempre natural saking manood ng playback. 'Di alam nu’ng tao nandoon ako nanonood. Tapos sabi ng tao, 'Itong Jake Cuenca na 'to dapat nag-model nalang to, 'hindi na dapat naga-artista 'to eh,'" Cuenca said.
Now six years into his being a Kapamilya, Cuenca continues to reap the fruits of signing with the network.
Aside from earning various lead roles in successful Kapamilya soaps, Cuenca has also been cited as Best Supporting Actor for his role in Star Cinema film "In the Name of Love."
The actor, however, is not resting on his laurels.
Cuenca currently top-bills afternoon soap "Kung Ako'y Iiwan Mo" along with actresses Shaina Magdayao and Bangs Garcia. He is also set to star in upcoming primetime series "Kahit Puso'y Masugatan" alongside actresses Andi Eigenmann and Iza Calzado, and actor Gabby Concepcion.
