MANILA - The first trailer "She's Dating The Gangster," Star Cinema's movie adaptation of the best-selling book, has been released.
In the 2-minute teaser, 17-year-old Athena (Kathryn Bernardo) strikes a deal with school heartthrob Kenji (Daniel Padilla) to pretend to be his girlfriend, in the hope of making his ex-girlfriend jealous.
As in the popular novel by Bianca Bernardino, the movie is set in the '90s, which is made evident in the trailer with the fashion choices of the characters and their bulky gadgets.
The trailer also gives a glimpse of Bernardo and Padilla playing different characters, apparently at the present time. Padilla's character is surprised to know that his father was a gangster, whose "great love" is revealed to be Athena.
Slated to premiere on July 16, "She's Dating the Gangster" will be the third big-screen outing of the rumored couple, following "Must Be... Love" and "Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay," which were both released last year.
The film is directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, who previously worked with both Padilla and Bernardo in the hit television series "Got To Believe."
