MANILA - An 11-year-old singer hopes to re-introduce the genre of Kundiman to a whole new generation, and she surprised everyone with her choice of what to sing at the blind auditions of "The Voice Kids" aired Saturday.
Rein Carmelite Pineda, who hails from Valenzuela City, demonstrated her operatic voice with a performance of a song titled "Kulasisi" --a traditional Filipino love song.
"Gusto ko ipaalala sa ating kabataan 'yung sarili nating awit," Pineda said, when asked why she chose the song for the auditions.
Both Coach Lea Salonga and Sarah Geronimo turned for Pineda, with the former commending her for choosing bravely. "Very unique 'yung pinili mo para sa blind auditions. It's very refreshing. And it's something I'm very good at," Salonga said.
"Kung ganyan kadisiplinado ang singer, kahit dalhin mo siya sa pop, or R&B, ang importante talaga ang foundation ng magandang technique ng pagkanta and that's what you have," added Geronimo.
Pineda, however, chose to go with her idol, Salonga. She became the 16th member of her team, with the blind auditions set to end tomorrow June 22.
"The Voice Kids," which is hosted by Luis Manzano and Alex Gonzaga, airs Saturdays at 6:45 p.m. and on Sundays at 7:30 p.m.
