MANILA – Darren Espanto did not expect to click right away with Malaysian YouTube sensation Nik Qistina when they first met.
Qistina is currently in the country to join Espanto in promoting their collaborations, which are included in the latter’s “Be with Me Deluxe” album.
“We clicked right away because before meeting each other, we were already talking to each other on Instagram and Twitter about the songs. I feel that we were doing that just so when we met we wouldn’t be too awkward as well,” Espanto said.
When asked whose idea it was to team up, Espanto said: “We’re from the same record label and they got us together. We heard each other’s songs and we recorded them. We just really liked the way we sounded together.”
According to the “The Voice Kids” alumnus, he likes Qistina’s personality a lot because “she’s very chill but at the same time, she’s also playful and funny and she’s inspiring to others as well.”
Was he hurt when he learned that he isn’t Qistina’s crush? “It’s fine because we’re good friends at saka may iba pang panahon para magka-crush sa iba’t ibang tao, ganun lang. At may kasunduan kami ni mommy na huwag muna mag-girlfriend,” he said.
Espanto’s “Be with Me” album features his new single “My Baby & Me” featuring Qistina. Also included is their stripped-down version of Qistina’s song “Young Hearts.”
Espanto recently won the Favorite Artist and Favorite Male Artist award at the 2017 MYX Music Awards and has won countless trophies from prestigious award-giving bodies.
He also has platinum ("Darren") and gold record ("Be with Me") albums, along with nine No. 1 singles. He is the youngest performer to hold a solo concert at Mall of Asia Arena.
Espanto is one of the mainstays of the ABS-CBN variety show “ASAP.”
