MANILA - The rather peaceful ending of the "The Legal Wife" became talk of the town in social media, as it drew mixed reactions from Filipinos after it aired Friday evening.
Moments after the finale, thousands of netizens took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to air their thoughts on the unusually quiet ending.
Most of the users noted how it ended realistically and not with the formulaic and exaggerated tense-filled kidnapping and shooting incidents.
The finale showed Nicole, portrayed by Maja Salvador, making amends for being the mistress in the life of Monica (played by Angel Locsin). It also showed her reconciling with her father, as well as promising her son that she will try to become a better mother.
The show also showed Monica lamenting the things her husband, Adrian (Jericho Rosales), did to him -- the good and the bad -- and her struggles over whether to forgive the person she once called her husband.
Filipinos were quick to heap praise on both Locsin and Salvador for their portrayals, with Locsin as the "legal wife" who is stuck between staying and going, and Salvador as the mistress who just wants to move on from her mistakes.
Their performance propelled the hashtag #TheLegalWifeFinale to the number one spot in the worldwide trends of Twitter.
Some netizens, however, were not quite satisfied with the finale's ending. The hashtag "Yun na yun" was also among the local trends as Filipinos voiced out their confusion as to the fate of the estranged couple.
In the series' final scene, Monica handed Adrian her wedding ring and hinted that they might get back together someday.
"Binabalik ko 'yan sa iyo. Sana itago mo mabuti kasi malay mo dumating 'yung araw na isuot mo ulit sa akin," she said, before leaving a kiss on his cheek and bidding him farewell.
The two then look at each other a final time before Monica smiles, and starts walking away.
