MANILA, Philippines – Most Filipinos across the globe took to the microblogging site Twitter over what they felt was a double whammy following Jessica Sanchez’s and Manny Pacquiao’s losses on “American Idol” and in boxing, respectively.
The terms “First Jessica Sanchez” made it to Twitter’s worldwide trending topics as Filipinos expressed disappointment over the two consecutive losses.
Twitter user Kath Jovellano, for one, said: “Proof that something's wrong with people's minds these days. First Jessica Sanchez. Now Manny Pacquiao. Who's next?”
Twitter user @itskaybaby, meantime, said: “Just taking this in. Does the world have something against Filipinos? First Jessica Sanchez now Pacquiao.”
As for Karl Brian Joble, he said: “Really disappointed right now, first Jessica Sanchez and now Manny Pacquiao....T_T but #MannyPacquiaoIsStillTheWorldsBestBoxer”
“Another disappointing event; first, Jessica Sanchez's placing runner-up in Idol then now, Pacquiao's loss over Bradley. Sa,” said Dino Bernardo.
Ryan Gaton, meantime, said it feels like “American Idol” all over again. “First Jessica Sanchez got robbed, now Manny Pacquiao? #RIPBoxing.”
Sanchez, who is half-Filipino, was named “American Idol” Season 11 runner-up after she failed to gather more votes compared to Georgia’s Phillip Phillips last May 23.
Pacquiao, on the other hand, surprisingly lost to American boxer Timothy Bradley in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight clash at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday.
The undefeated Bradley claimed Pacquiao's WBO crown after winning via a controversial split decision 113-115, 115-113, and 115-113.
It was Pacquiao's first career defeat since a 2005 decision loss to Mexican legend Erik Morales.
Sanchez sang the American national anthem ahead of the Pacquiao-Bradley fight at the MGM Grand Arena.
In her official Twitter account, Sanchez congratulated Bradley but she said she is upset about the results.
“Congrats to the new winner but I'm still really upset about the results :(“ she tweeted.
