MANILA -- Liza Soberano admitted that she broke down in tears while taping the upcoming episode of "Maalaala Mo Kaya," where she will play Pia Wurtzbach, the first Filipina to win the Miss Universe crown in over four decades.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News' MJ Felipe, the young actress said she gave in to her emotions after she grew frustrated after failing to properly copy Wurtzbach's walk.
"Kasi I don't like it when I'm unable to please myself. And I felt like I wasn't able to do the walk properly. So I got pressured and then I started crying," she said.
Soberano also shared that she found the role difficult, explaining: "Because I don't know how she is in real life. I've never met her before that."
She managed to pull through, however, thanks to some advice she received from Wurtzbach herself: "Sabi niya, 'Kaya mo iyan.' Sabi ko naman, 'I don't know how to be as confident as you. I'm not that type of person.'"
Soberano continued: "Then sabi niya, 'No, Liza. I was never as confident as everybody thought I was before. I just gained the courage when I did Binibining Pilipinas.' So I kinda got an insight on how to portray the role."
According to Soberano, she wore Wurtzbach's original Miss Universe sash for the episode. But she clarified that the gowns used were replicas.
"Hindi rin po ata kakasiya," she quipped.
Asked if portraying a beauty queen convinced her to give pageants a try, Soberano said: "I don't see it as something I would want to do in the future. I like watching beauty pageants, seeing other people do it pero for me, I don't think I would ever join a beauty pageant."
