Claudine death rumor a scam, lawyer warns
MANILA - The lawyer of actress Claudine Barretto denied on Tuesday a rumor spreading on social media claiming that the former Kapamilya star has died of drug overdose.
In an interview over DZMM, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio said they have sought the help of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) Cybercrime Unit to deal with the phishing scam that even used ABS-CBN in its fake report.
Phishing refers to emails that pretend to be from a legitimate company.
"May nag-tweet pa sa akin ng link ng notice nga daw na may logo pa ng ABS-CBN... May litrato ni Claudine doon... Nakalagay, 'Claudine Barretto, 1979-2014,'" said the lawyer.
Topacio blasted the "cruel joke" on Barretto who is facing controversies involving her sisters and her estranged husband, Raymart Santiago.
"Malisyosong spam 'to. Di 'to nakakatuwang joke.. It's a cruel joke. Huwag naman sanang ganito. 'Yung mga taong may galit kay Claudine, huwag naman sana ganito," said Topacio.
"Alam niyo ba, may isang fan pa si Claudine, si Ate Virgie 'yung tawag nila doon, na inatake sa puso dahil akala niya totoo. Kaya nakakaperwisyo talaga," he added.
Santiago last year accused Barretto of using illegal drugs, and even claimed his wife's alleged drug use on video.
Barretto, however, tested negative for illegal drugs.
