MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE) Young actress Julia Barretto is set to topbill a TV series for the first time.
Barretto will take on the title character in ABS-CBN's upcoming series "Cofradia," which is based on the Dominador Ad Castillo novel of the same title. It tells the story of Cofradia, a young woman who is afraid to fall in love because of her insecurities. With the help of a magic candle, she eventually transforms into a beautiful lady.
"Cofradia" was first portrayed by Gloria Romero in 1953, and later on by Gina Alajar in 1973.
"To have been given the opportunity to play Cofradia, sobrang thankful ako," Barretto said on Friday.
The director of "Cofradia," as well as its other cast members, have yet to be announced.
The series will premiere on ABS-CBN later this year.
"Cofradia" was offered to Barretto amid the controversy including her mother, Marjorie, and aunts Gretchen and Claudine.
Before being formally introduced as an artist of ABS-CBN's talent management arm Star Magic early this year, Barretto previously appeared in a number of Kapamilya series like "Kokey" (2007), "Walang Kapalit" (2007), and "Palos" (2008).
