Sarah G reveals she almost lost her voice
MANILA (UPDATED) – When she won “Star for a Night” in 2003, Sarah Geronimo admitted she had to blend with the trend then, which is to prove that every singer, to be considered successful, can hit the high notes in any song.
After more than 10 years of belting songs, Geronimo said she is still recovering from this punishing vocal style.
“Pagkapanalo ko, nagkaroon ng trend na kailangan belter ka para ma-consider ka na magaling na singer. Nandoon ang pressure noon. Nung mga panahon na yun, ang mga songs na binibigay sa amin matataas. Matira matibay talaga. Kung sino ang hindi pipiyok 'yun ang magaling,” the 25-year-old singer said in the “Pinoy Hits” episode of “Cheche Lazaro Presents” which aired on Sunday.
“Nag-suffer po talaga 'yung boses ko. Nawala 'yung boses ko. Nawala 'yung falsetto ko. Nanginginig na 'yung boses ko. Kumbaga nagre-recover pa lang talaga 'yung boses ko hanggang ngayon,” she added.
Fearing that she might lose her voice, Geronimo talked to her manager about her concerns.
“Sabi ko sa sarili ko, hindi ko kailangan gawin ito. Hindi ako ito. Kaya ko bumirit at a certain level lang. Importanteng malaman mo kung ano lang 'yung range mo as a singer. Sabi ko sa sarili ko, hindi ko kailangan bumirit para mapansin. Hindi ko kailangan makipagsabayan sa ganun,” she said.
Having cemented her status as the country's "Pop Star Princess," Geronimo said she began recording songs which come from the heart.
“Sabi ko ang kailangan ko is makapag-record ng mga songs na galing sa puso ko. Songs na I'll be able to relate to my audience, songs that will touch and inspire people,” she said.
This is also the reason she rarely accepts two projects at the same time.
‘Kung meron akong concert, mag-concentrate muna ako sa singing ko para hindi naaapektuhan 'yung boses ko sa mga late nights, early mornings sa taping, sa shooting. Kaya kapag may album, album lang. Kapag may ‘The Voice,’ ‘The Voice’ lang,” she said.
Since her "Star for A Night" win, Geronimo has achieved numerous milestones. Aside from best-selling albums, Geronimo also proved herself as a live performer as DVDs of her concerts have all achieved platinum status.
As an actress, Geronimo has appeared in numerous TV series. Since 2003, she has topbilled four Kapamilya soap operas. She has also been named as the Box Office Queen following the massive success of her romantic-comedy trilogy with John Lloyd Cruz.
But even with all of these under her belt, Geronimo shared she still has her worries.
“Kapag nandoon ka na, mas mahirap i-sustain. Less po 'yung work ngayon pero mas mahirap 'yung preparation kasi higher 'yung expectations,” said Geronimo, who has been in the entertainment industry for 11 years now.
