MANILA -- OPM icon Freddie Aguilar said he only wishes the best for his daughter, Maegan, after she accused him of being "a bad man and a negligent father" in an interview published on Monday.
In a statement sent to ABS-CBN News, the 61-year-old singer said he finds "unfortunate that my daughter decided to take a private matter to the press."
"I have been supporting my 35-year-old daughter and her family for many years now and have no intention of dragging her through the mud for entertainment's sake," he said.
Speaking with entertainment columnist Dolly Ann Carvajal, Maegan criticized her father for allegedly kicking her and her family out of their home after an argument over "rotten veggies" and her unpaid debt of P1,500.
Addressing this, Aguilar only said, "My daughter, her partner, and all the other people living in my house know the truth."
Maegan, in her interview, also accused the "Anak" hitmaker of derailing her and her siblings' showbiz careers "so that we would be forever at his mercy."
She said that defending her father's relationship with a 17-year-old, whom he married in Islamic rites last November, was a case of "blind loyalty" and that her statement supporting them was a lie.
The younger Aguilar also alleged that the music legend has a one-year-old daughter he left in Pangasinan, supposedly because his wife "brain-washed" him. Aguilar's wife, Maegan added, is "poisoning [his] mind" so that she and her family would have control of his money.
Aguilar did not answer any of the allegations about his wife.
"I wish Maegan all the best as she moves on and takes responsibility of her own life," he said in his statement. "It is because I love my daughter that I choose to say nothing more on this matter."
